As most Angelenos would agree, our lives evolve around our cars. Without them, we would be pretty much inaccessible to most everything in LA. So with that in mind, we always have to keep our cars well maintained with regular servicing and oil changes. K and I dropped off his car on Saturday for a 52.5K service and after last week's phone conversation with the dumb wench regarding the "missing part", I had another service manager check in on it for me while I was there. And what did you know.....they HAVE the part in stock. Boy, I gave the service department a piece of my mind about that wench. So the part is there but it will take a few days to fix so I'm bringing his car back to the dealership on Wednesday to get the part installed. But during the interim they will give me a loaner car (read: big honking gas guzzling american car.) As with all maintenance there is almost always bad news and perhaps some good news. This time was no different. Bad news: The top tank on the radiator is leaking and needs to be replaced. It will cost you about $540.69. <faint> Good news: But I've already taken care of it for you already as a one time good will service we have here at XXXXX. So it's going to be free and it won't cost you a dime. <kissing the service manager> So that was my good news and bad news for Saturday. K and I walked out of there very pleased and happy with the service and the nice freebie. While our car was being serviced, we walked to the local theatre to catch X-Men. It was definitely the wrong day to go since it was also the opening weekend of the Pokemon movie. Egads! I felt like I was in elementary school. However I enjoyed X-Men immensely since it had action, superheroes, special effects and all those doodads. Hands down, it was one of the better movies I've seen in a long time. I can't wait for the sequel. After the car was done, we headed to the Monterey Park area for some grub at Savoy's. Being that it was 4:00PM already, I knew we would be able to find not just a parking space around there but also a seat in the restaurant itself. The food was de-li-cious. Yum yum. I had their curry pork chop and escargot with a glass of chrysanthemum tea on the side. K had the stewed beef in the roasted mustard sauce and an iced cappuccino. We don't hang around MP as much these days but we decided to take a visit to Ng Hing Kee after our late lunch. Ng Hing Kee is a raggedy run down pseudo bookstore-music store that caters to mostly Cantonese people. It's no bigger than your living room but they manage to fit a ton of crap in there. Needless to say, if you get molested in there, you can't even figure out who touched you since it's so fuckin cramped in there. I always like to make my stay there as short as possible. But if you want to find some cheap Japanese or Chinese knockoff cd's or if you want to pick up those Hong Kong gossip magazines or buy concert tickets for upcoming Chinese concerts in the LA area...then that's where you should head. I picked up this (a tad bit outdated) Canto cd for $6.00. Who can beat that??
Being the homebodies that we are, we stayed in on Saturday night to recuperate from the long day. We rented Jackie Chan's movie Gorgeous in which he stars with Shu Kei (Hsu Chi) and also The Whole Nine Yards starring Matthew Perry and Bruce Willis. Gorgeous is the love story between a rich & successful playboy who has no true love in his life and a young girl from a small fishing village in Taiwan. It's not exactly a Notting Hill or Titanic type of movie but it's ok if you like a chinese love story and want to see more of Jackie Chan's fighting. Check the link for more info on the story. The Whole Nine Yards was pretty hilarious and Matthew Perry does a great job in his performance as does Bruce Willis, Natasha Henstridge, Amanda Peet, Michael Clarke Duncan and Rosanna Arquette. If you haven't seen this movie about a dentist and a hit man, then you should. Check out this page for the story. On Sunday, I went to the trade show for the world of pets called Super Zoo at the Long Beach Convention Center. Although the show was not open to the public and allowed only retailers, wholesalers and exhibitors - I got a chance to go since one of my friends is in the trade. It's incredible how much there is in the pet industry and the amount of products they offer for each and every type of pet. It was more of a product oriented show and not so much the pets itself although there were tanks and tanks of fishes and cages of birds. I felt bad for the baby african grey parrots that didn't even have its feathers yet and there they were on exhibit. They huddled against small stuffed animals in lieu of their mothers. I felt so sad. Luckily there weren't any puppies there or else I would have had to kidnap a few and take them home.
It was definitely an eye opening experience at the trade show since I've never seen anything like that. I'm sure America spends more money than any other country on pet products since it seems like we dote on animals and endorse animal rights more than anyone else. And by the looks of the show - it's not a surprise. We were starving by the time we got out of the convention center. It's been awhile since I've been to Kings Hawaiian Restaurant - so that's where we headed. Yum Yum. It's been a long time but it was as tasty as ever. Here's a look at what a few of us got.
There's nothing quite like good friends, good food, good times. To top things off, we had the Hawaiian Paradise cake for dessert. De-lish! If you've made it this far without hanging yourself, I applaud you. You obviously love my website too much and live vicariously through the life of a 30 year old married woman. I'll continue tomorrow...because the weekend wasn't over yet! I'm out. |
