savvy savoy
june 28, 2002

back when i was a kid and then later as a teenager, i would always frequent one of my fave places called "savoy". back then, it was a really nice upscale hk style restaurant with good looking non-asian waiters, mirrored walls, spotlighted tables and in the corner, someone playing live piano. it's very difficult to describe the ambience, you just had to be there and the food was unbelievably great for the price. it was really, a very in place to be aside from say, the world over in the beverly center (which is a whole other story to get into at another time). ask anyone who's been there way back when and their eyes will glaze over with a smile on their face. but sadly, the restaurant closed down before i could legally buy liquor.

fast forward several years and i got word that a new restaurant opened across the street from where the old savoy was and it was going by the same name. so i stopped in to take a look and have been going back there ever since. their menu is very limited and only consists of a pageful of items to order and the two main drinks to order are: chrysanthemum tea and cappuccino. as much as i love their grub, their minimal seating area and difficulty in parking doesn't give me much incentive to go there. but i always get cravings for their pork chop curry rice (yum!) so i somehow make my way there regardless. the best time to go would be in the afternoon around 2-4pm since that's way after the lunch crowd and before the dinner crowd.

anyway, i still miss the old savoy because the new savoy is anything but like the old one and the kids who loiter there smoking and what not, thinking they're all badass are as irritating as hell. shit, these kids wouldn't even know about the old savoy back in the day because they were all still in diapers! but oh well, when the curry beckons, you don't have a choice but to put up with it.
