the more americanized version of the makunouichi bento at usui.

whenever i go out to eat, i usually take lots of photos of food. but when i get home, i end forgetting about them most of the time and let them sit in my harddrive -- wasting away, like my resumé. i thought i had more random photos of food in my older files waiting to be posted but in my haste, i must have deleted some of them because i'm an utter anal neat freak, even in my harddrive. so these were the only ones left behind. i don't have much to blab about today and rather let pictures do the talking.

various nigiri sushi from usui.

i often times hit a place called "usui" in little tokyo. the two photos above are from there. it's a rather authentic looking hole in the wall type of place and the owners have seen us there all too many times over the past decade or so. i normally have their makunouichi bento, which has a good sampling of homestyle japanese cuisine. but i must have been in the mood for the americanized version of the makunouichi one day and got the one with teriyaki chicken, california roll and tempura instead. good eats, good price. authentic homestyle japanese grub. what's freaky though was that i was pushing a shopping cart at target one day and saw the owner's wife there as well. turns out, she lives in my 'hood. small worldo.

com bi cha thit nuong at pho 79. tasty!

the com bi cha thit nuong (pardon me for not using the traditional vietnamese accents on the words because i'm sure i'll fuck it up and end up typing something like, "i eat my dog's shit" or something) is one my favorites at pho 79 in westminster aka little saigon. basically, a rice dish with shredded pork, egg loaf and charbroiled beef or pork served with fish sauce. there are other pho 79's in LA but for some reason, the one in the true heart of little saigon tastes better. *shrug* for your information, i don't eat pho. ever. so don't even take me to a place that only serves pho and nothing else or i'll cram some complimentary jalapeños up your ass.

i'm angry today.

chirashi sushi from sushi kamon.

more raw fish photos for you. aren't you in luck? the box o' raw fish covering sushi rice above is the yummy chirashi. i don't eat that either. i mean, i'll help myself to the raw fish on top but i don't dig the whole vat of sushi rice below. call me weird. what i do eat though are the various nigiri sushi shown below. sometimes if i'm in the mood, i'll order the nigiri (sushi on top of or with rice) set but often times i just order a la carte. shown below are from top left clockwise: inari, unagi, hamachi, sake, hotategai which means, tofu skin/beancurd with rice wrapped inside, eel, yellowtail, salmon and scallops. more often than not though, i like to have a nice balance of cooked foods with my raw food.

again , various sushi similar to the one up there.

another thing we never had in LA aside from boba, were these drinks with sealed saran wrap-like lids and with cute images on it no less. the ones below show your zodiac signs. what *would* be nice is if they actually give the sign that you really are. but that's not feasible is it? you know what would be EVEN better? having lottery scratchers on these lids, so when you're done, you can scratch them off and see if you're a millionaire. if they did that, i'd be dropping dough on these drinks like there's no tomorrow. knowing my luck, some kid with a rich daddy who bought him a "rexus" at the age of 15 would probably get the lucky scratcher.

oh yay, those drinks with zodiac lids :p

go out and eat some yummy food this weekend. do it for me. :) funny how on the week i'm updating 5 days in a row, no one is visiting the site. so sad ne?

I'm out.
