curried

for most of you in los angeles, today was a reminder of what summer is usually like. after being in the subzero (ok maybe not subzero) depths of winter for so many months, i don't think our bodies nor our minds are used to the sudden fluctuation in weather. the skies were surely a sign of the summer nights to come our way in the months ahead.

now, if only i can find my damn shorts and if only my legs weren't so dry & pale!

^ corn potage soup from curry house

kung fu update: i apologize to those (especially you womefolk out there) who are tired of reading about my kung fu class but my life is really blase these days and only consists of this activity in addition to working & working out at the gym. i haven't gone to dance class in 2 weeks, so i think i've regressed severely in that area. but i will have to go back next week i think.

i went to JKD today and had one of the hardest sessions in the 8 weeks i've been training there. it was also the VERY FIRST time in these 8 weeks that i've finally felt like i know what i'm doing...albeit not very good still. ha ha. the people there are finally getting to know my name and i can say hello to nearly everyone now without wondering if it's steve, brian or pete or what. they shouldn't have a hard time remembering me since i'm the only asian girl there.

the sifus are pairing me up with some older teens now and with some other folks throughout the session. it's different parrying with different people. you learn a lot from just adjusting to a new person's body, motions and techniques. today, they paired a total newbie with me - i would say he is about 13 years old maybe? he held my kicking bag and focus gloves for me. i think i scared the shit out of him when i punched and kicked the bags that he was holding. my sifu later told me that he had a shocked expression on his face when i first landed a jab cross hook combo to him. i was too focused to even notice what he looked like. on a few occasions, he held the gloves too close to his face and i nearly punched him in the jaw. oops.

later in class, they paired me with a guy who has been going there on and off for the past few years. he has a lot of knowledge under his belt but he says he's rusty. we practiced a lot of aikido takedowns on the mat and then switched into dumog (filipino art of wrestling). it was tough and now my shoulder and arms feel like they need to be dislocated and reconnected again.

my partner was surprised to learn that it was me, myself who decided to come learn martial arts. he thought perhaps my significant other wanted me to learn some self defense or something. i have to say that it's a little weird to be wrestling in some odd positions with guys. my boobs were obviously in the way and as the sifu pointed out in class to everyone - my arms and legs are short and with an adversary like myself, they would need to readjust the move on me. :p they just know how to boost a girl's ego i say. *cough*

i think overall, a couple of the sifus were impressed with my progress and my flexibility. they think i'm double jointed somewhere in my arms because i don't feel pain in certain positions where people normally would begin to cry out. during my private lesson, my sifu told me that another sifu asked him how long i've been there since he's noticed that my punching, kicking and balance has improved alot. they also think i can go for my first test in september. uh...i'm not so sure i can do that though.

all i can say is that everytime after class, i walk out much taller, stronger and more fit than i have ever felt. it's an amazing sense of empowerment both mentally and physically.

^ seafood curry served with rice (not shown)

food: those who tuned out for the kung fu part can now read about the food part. :p ever since they opened up a curry house branch over in rowland heights, i haven't had the desire to go dine there. but today, i kinda felt like having an omelette rice. so with that in mind, i headed there for an early dinner.

curry house, for those who are not familiar with los angeles, is a japanese chain of restaurants serving curry, spaghetti and other japanese dishes. i used to go to the one in little tokyo but haven't visited in awhile. it's very similar to the places in hawaii such as coco ichibanya.

i really love their corn potage soup but try not to indulge much as i'm allergic to corn. ha! i lived dangerously today though. it's creamy and very corn-y with the perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness.

TGILW had the seafood curry with rice while i had the spicy omelette rice dish. inside the omelette, there were bits of chicken tossed in a chili flavored rice. and the meat sauce on the outside was slightly sweet spicy as well. a very flavorful dish that was a bit too carb heavy for me but i guess once in awhile it's ok.

i usually have the hamburger bolognese spaghetti dish but i'm always a mess when i eat spaghetti and end up splattering it everywhere on my shirt.

currently listening to: book of love, boy

i'm out.
