favorite 50 foods
february 17, 2005

when i first read this, i knew i had to swipe borrow the wilco's
favorite fifty foods (with permission of course) to answer here on my
site. since i love food and consider myself somewhat of an adventurer in the
world of dining and am picky about my food, i thought this was a great questionaire
to try out. it turned out to be harder to answer than i thought. i realize
that there are a lot of things that i don't eat much of and other things that
i eat much too often of. i have to expand my sphere of gastronomic indulgences
asap.
how does one choose a favorite anything anyway? thanks wilco for the entertaining 50 questions and for really making me think. hard.
1. favorite main entree:
why is the first question so difficult? i would have to say some sort of fresh
fish like opah prepared in the hawaiian regional cuisine (HRC) style. there's
so many good ways of preparing this type of dish using all sorts of fish such
as seabass, ahi, moi, onaga etc. am i being too vague here? an example i guess
would be the ginger crusted ahi with yuzu butter sauce. i'm salivating now.
ok, a visual you say? then something like this from my may 2004 trip at 3660
On The Rise:

2. favorite salad:
i love salads so this is hard to answer. um. um. um. how about either a cobb
salad without blue cheese with a light miso dressing or a seafood salad
(i'm talking about real seafood on top of greens here) with the aforementioned
miso dressing.
3. favorite soup:
a not too salty but piping hot chicken tortilla soup, although you can find
me frequently ordering french onion soup as well. i love a good corn chowder
but sometimes i get kinda lactose intolerant and then it wouldn't be pretty.
4. favorite appetizer:
on the mainland, fried zucchini with ranch dressing. if i was in hawaii, then
poke or ahi katsu.
5. favorite dessert:
chocolate ice cream.
6. favorite fruit:
gala apple.
7. favorite vegetable:
i absolutely love vegetables. i can be a vegetarian if i really had to. but
it would be a toss up between an eggplant and broccoli.
8. favorite sashimi:
this is a toughie. i'm torn. i want to say hamachi (yellowtail) but i really
do love a great shiromaguro (albacore) even better.
9. favorite sushi roll:
caterpillar roll? california roll? spicy tuna roll? i'm not very good at narrowing
things down to one item am i?
10. favorite soda beverage:
diet squirt or fresca (did you think i would say tab?)
11. favorite non-alcoholic beverage:
i hate to say that it's going to be a soda but it will be diet coke with lots
and lots of lemon wedges. if it can't be a soda, then it would be water.
12. favorite alcoholic shot:
i don't drink much anymore and can't remember what i used to drink aside from
tequila or shots of crown royal from my younger days. i don't have a good
answer to this question. ask me again after i visit koreatown this weekend.
13. favorite alcoholic drink:
i think a good light beer such as corona light, hite, sapporo or caguama is
right up my alley.
14. favorite cake:
chocolate souffle cake. or a coffee swiss roll from one of those chinese bakeries
(but it HAS to be good though).
15. favorite pie:
lemon cream cheese pie from marie callenders.
16. favorite ice cream:
haagen dazs chocolate ice cream. i'm simple, just gimme my own pint.
17. favorite milkshake:
i rarely drink milkshakes and prefer a mocha malt if anything. does that count
as a shake?
18. favorite cut of beef:
god, i dunno! i rarely eat steak. so i'll just have to wing it and say, filet
mignon, especially the one from ninnikuya - which can easily beat out the
fish for favorite entree.
19. favorite cuisine:
hands down, japanese cuisine. even though chinese cuisine has a lot more variety
in my opinion, i sometimes find chinese food a bit too heavy and oily.
20. favorite part of chicken: (leg, wing, thigh, breast)
i'm an honorary twinkie, so i have to say that the chicken breast is my favorite
part. i don't like to deal with bones because i'm lazy.
21. favorite fried food:
a good french fry that is soft on the inside and slightly crunchy on the outside.
22. favorite cookie:
um...those soft & chewy chocolate chip cookies w/ nuts from mrs. fields?
got milk?
23. favorite indian curry:
who thought of this question? wilco,
did you? i don't eat indian curry enough to know which one i like. i think
i'm too afraid of the burning anus to eat indian curry. i really ought to
go eat more indian food though considering i should grab a meal after my threading
sessions.
24. favorite gum:
dentyne ice, spearmint flavor please.
25. favorite candy:
you know, i love those blackcurrant/redcurrant pastilles. do any of you know
what i'm talking about here? see below.

26. favorite crepe:
banana crepe. although in japan i had tuna fish crepe and other funky crepes.
27. favorite sandwich:
this is a toughie as i'm a big sandwich person. but hands down i absolutely
love the prime rib beef dip sandwich at houstons.
*faint* a fab club sandwich follows a close second.
28. favorite pizza:
veggie pizza with pineapples.
29. favorite mexican dish:
living in los angeles, we are privy to a lot of great mexican food. which
one which one which one is my favorite? i have to say enchiladas with shredded
chicken or beef is my favorite. followed extremely closely by taquitos with
guacamole & sour cream.
30. favorite vietnamese dish:
banh mi dac biet - the ever affordable and delicious vietnamese special sandwich
with various meats, pate, jalapeno peppers on a toasted french roll.
31. favorite korean dish:
easiest question here. the chadol baegi (beef brisket) wrapped in the duk
rice wrapper. look at my january entries for photos.
32. favorite chinese dish:
is this where i get to say the lettuce wrap? this is not a very fair question
as the list would be infinite. there's way too many things on this list to
even fit on this site.
33. favorite filipino dish:
i admit, i don't eat enough filipino foods to know what is good. i guess this
is another area i ought to delve into more. but for the sake of this questionaire,
i'll say those yummy chicken empanadas from red ribbon bakery. if anyone can
suggest good filipino dishes, i'm all ears. thanks!
34. favorite southern food:
a very fattening chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. i can
feel my arteries hardening just from typing this out.
35. favorite instant noodles brand:
sam yang or nongshim kim chee ramen.
36. favorite juice:
passion orange guava juice or otherwise lovingly known as the POG.
37. favorite snack food:
dried cuttlefish, preferably the sweet & spicy kind OR lihingmui rice
crackers. if i'm trying to be good, then it's trail mix.
38. favorite fish:
i'll say...the opah (moonfish).
39. favorite cereal:
i don't eat cereals much anymore. but if i had to think back to what i like,
it would be one of those healthy ones like smart start, chex, raisin bran
or special k. boring, i know.
40. favorite pho:
i'm one of those strange people who don't indulge in pho. but if i HAD to
choose, it would just be a plain pho with slices of rare beef and meatballs.
i think i've only had pho 3 times in my entire life.
41. favorite breakfast food:
oatmeal with brown sugar OR an omelette with shredded beef and mozzarella
cheese aka joe's special.
42. favorite french food:
don't even remember when i had french food last. i eat escargots though. but
i usually find french food really heavy so i would have to say a good bouillabaisse
would suffice. [note to self: eat more french food this year]
43. favorite mcdonalds food:
filet o' fish or if the mc rib is in season, then that's good too. just hold
the pickles.
44. favorite pasta dish:
pasta? do people eat carbs anymore? i guess i'm simple, i just like thin spaghetti
(not to be confused with angel hair pasta folks) with my homemade spaghetti
sauce. er, it's not really homemade, it's ragu with lots of other things thrown
in so i call it homemade.
45. favorite bread:
crispy toasty french bread that's baby soft on the inside. is it wrong to
use baby and bread in the same sentence? can it be garlic bread as well? i
have a thing for garlic bread, especially the one at ninnikuya!
46. favorite tea:
sweetened chrysanthemum tea is great but if i was in hong kong, then a kick
ass hong kong style milk tea rocks. of course if you make me order some tea
from one of those boba places, then it will be the iced green tea with boba.
47. favorite 7-11 slurpee flavor:
haven't had a slurpee in so long...what flavors are out there anyway? if memory
serves me right, i do like the coca cola slurpee or that blue colored one.
it's just like drinking icy sugar isn't it?
48. favorite hershey's kiss:
almond kiss.
49. favorite flavor of m&m's:
peanut m&m's, no question about it.
50. favorite candy bar:
cadbury roasted almond (can you tell i like nuts from these last 3 questions?).
so there's my 50 answers. i realized that i rarely have one answer to any
one question. i guess that's the life of a habitual diner-outer. i'm also
sure that i will go back to change my answer tomorrow sometime after i've
had a chance to really think about the answers.
