scarf girls
january 17, 2005

duringthe holidays, i knitted up a bunch of scarves for my girlfriends as christmas presents. i didn't get a chance to share with you all what the final outcome of the scarves looked like. but for the ones i have photos of, you can see all my lovely girlfriends with their one of a kind creations from moi.

some of the other recipients, i don't have photos of but i took a photo of the scarf before i gave it to them and there are about 3 more ladies who i haven't seen yet, who will be getting their late christmas presents in the near future when we have our girl's brunch out. i'll post all of those other photos another time so as to not ruin the surprise for them.

and for some of you guys who hate this stuff - i know who you are - just skip this entry.

fishpimp and BQE received their scarves during our annual christmas party. i think choosing colors for friends is hard because although you *think* you know them and know what they like, in the end it's a very personal preference. i was actually most concerned when i was making the scarf for BQE, since i wanted to find a shade that is not only classy & modern but also would complement everyone's wardrobe, personality, style and would enhance their skin tone. i didn't have much problem with fishpimp since i already knew that she wanted something in "pink". i found a great color in the new rowan big wool for her. i liked it so much that i think i need to make one for myself. i think i would look pretty in pink too. :p but BQE's camel, saffron, mustard color combo was really rockin' and so many people who saw the scarf at work loved it.

and no, BQE does not stand for the Brooklyn Queens Expressway.

for my dear jaycine, i knew she liked primary colors but i just couldn't bring myself to make her something that looked like elementary school sesame street colors. no, that won't do. but i found a great yarn in muted primary colors and i mixed that with a dark charcoal gray yarn for an angled stripe scarf. it rolled up alot though, even after i blocked it but it turns out that the queen hedgie liked it that way. :) or she's just trying to make me happy. i swear, she looks so gorgeous when pregnant and it's not my scarf that's making her so pretty either. :)

donna was one of my first scarf recipients last year when i first started to learn how to knit. she got the lovely long bohemian red colored scarf [which has always been a big request since] the first time around so this time, i made her a much shorter one in a grayish blue. the color is really unique and in a way, it's very modern & classy and could go with so many different colors. it was my first time trying this sort of stitch and was pleased that it came out rather nice on this bulky yarn. i think it looks great with her skin tone and all the BLACK clothes that she wears. i always wondered when a girl in hawaii would use a warm knitted scarf but now i know that the shocking a/c temps in the offices sometimes call for scarves. either that or it's always useful to have a nice neckwarmer when you need to travel to places say, below 70 degrees. haha.

linda and caroline were one of my first recipients this year. i presented theirs to them when we met up for lunch one day to do some knitting. since linda likes green as much as i do, i thought this lovely yarn that i purchased in hong kong last year would suit perfectly. it has olivey shades of green intertwined with a lighter greenish khaki shade. i also added fringes to hers (something that i usually don't do). for caroline, i gave her one of my favorite ones since i liked the orangish autumnal color of this tweedish yarn so much. it's not exactly the softest nor smoothest yarn but the colors are so vibrant and stunning that i thought would suit caroline's funky side. this is another one of those that i need to knit for myself. yeah, i always say that but never end up doing so.

the question i get asked the most is "how many scarves do you have?" to be honest, i have only 2 that i actually wear. i think it's more fun to make them for others so that they can enjoy it. afterall, a one of a kind hand knitted item is hard to come by these days.

i'll share more later. and believe me, there's plenty more to show & tell.

i'm out.
