lunchroom
june 03, 2005

occasionally, i may eat lunch in my company's lunch room. but most of the time, i don't. and it's when i eat my lunch in there that it reminds me of why i normally don't. because i'm chinese and asian american, i tend to bring or buy foods that are of my ethnic background or interests. this usually is something strange for those who don't eat anything outside of sweet and sour pork or fried rice.

i of course never bring stuff like fish or anything too seafoody as that would put me on everyone's hate list but i think other foods that are 'safe' are perfectly fine. but nonetheless, people just HAVE to stop by your table to see what you're eating and what is it exactly? this question is almost as irritating as where are you really from?

today, i felt like having some taiwanese food for lunch and so i went to guppy teahouse to pick up some food to go. i got the popcorn chicken (boneless pieces of chicken deep fried in a light batter and seasoned with salt & pepper) over rice. in the little bento box that it comes in, there's also a sprinking of corn, marinated cucumbers and a flavorful mixture of small tofu cubes. it comes with a miso soup. and i got my favorite, honey green tea w/ boba.

during lunch, i was also reminded why i don't eat lunch in the lunch room. what are you reading? i show people my book cover [the asian mystique] and they their face is a blank. i then proceed to say it's about how the western culture views asian women from china dolls, geishas, suzie wongs to dragon ladies and cold and deadly martial arts mistresses. their face is usually still a blank after that before they walk away.

hmm..never thought winnie could be spelled like this...
