red egg
may 05, 2005

a few weeks ago (note: many of my upcoming entries will begin like this), we celebrated my niece sofia's one month birthday. culturally, we celebrate that as what most would call the red egg party since red eggs are passed out during this time in celebration of the newborn's one month birthday. typically in the olden days, new mothers would have to abide by a series of customs and usually do not come out until the one month waiting period is over. the red egg party is where they will re-enter into public life and also at which time, they will show their baby to friends & family. you can check out the link for further info.

of course in america, many new mothers do not abide by those customs anymore. but one custom that is still prevalent is the red egg party. aside from the hard boiled eggs that are dyed red, there is usually a bounty of chinese food to celebrate with. nowadays many people have these parties at chinese restaurants with full 10 course meals but we kept it small and quaint and stress free (i think).

my mom did all the egg dyeing and spared the rest of us from looking like we had the hands of a serial killer. needless to say, that meant my kitchen looked like it was bathed in red for awhile.

^ my mom is sporting a funky bolero jacket and a new granddaughter. and yes, my mom is always naturally this tanned.

^ and we cannot forget my older niece, jasmine.
