izakaya surprise
march 04, 2007

so you know how i mentioned that TGILW said he wasn't planning anything for me this year?

well, he lied.

he actually did plan a surprise thing behind my back but only a few people was able to make it. there's a core group that i hang out with which consists of 5 couples but only 2 other couples were able to make it. it turned out to be all good as it made it easier to talk at the table and share food.

so TGILW arranged for the bday party at my fave new restaurant, ojiiya izakaya (which i talked about a few entries back). and of course i would have totally fallen for the surprise party until the day of the party, he was really sick from the flu and i said we don't have to go out to eat dinner BUT he insisted even in his coughing feverish state.

so i figured something fishy was in the air.

of course when we arrived at the restaurant and i looked at the parking lot, i noticed a particular friend's very high profile car. i later told them they all need to get some generic car for these birthday surprises from now on! or rent one dammit. but then again i'm one of those crazy girls who are really good at recognizing people's cars. it's an uncanny superpower really.

^ superman and leggygirl (and i cut out myself to the right there)

^ we ate a lot of yakitori skewers

^ their crab salad is delish. fresh real crab meat on a bead of greens with their house dressing.

^ tomato w/ bacon, chicken w/ garlic, chicken w/ lemon and a lone shitake

^ their tuna tataki was great. different flavor than typical sushi places but i prefer this even more.

^ bacon w/ asparagus, tebasaki and a bowl of agedashi tofu

^ deep fried pork loin cutlets

^ sake ochazuke again. simple comfort food at its best.

^ i think this was called the ojiya soba. they had a nice dollop of yamakake, egg, tempura, sliced meats among other things topping the cold soba noodles.

^ walnut and kabocha salad. i love kabocha so this was right up my alley.

coincidentally, on on the next evening, i had dinner plans with LK and pudgeefeet at the same place and we ordered pretty much similar dishes to the above. thanks for coming out to knit for a bit with me and then eat dinner too. and for helping me celebrate my birthday.

thanks to the fishpimp, DKB, superman and leggy girl and of course TGILW for the almost-surprise. ;)

currently listening to: bic runga, if i had you
