project DOMO [16]
march 21, 2007

DOMO received a visitor last week! and here she is looking out onto the very hazy LA view on the balcony. :D
although DOMO is really not in any way, shape or form in "showing condition", it's actually very exciting to see it before it gets glammed up. i actually enjoy the bare bones of the place and now that the drywall is in place...to actually see how much room (or how little room i should say) i have for everything. when it used to be just the wooden shell, i thought it had so much space. but after insulation, drywall, some spackling etc, you really see how much less there is. i'm still disappointed that one of the closets is quite narrow. but can't do much about it there.
anyway...
since the last DOMO update last month, we had a bit more drywall work done on DOMO but nothing significant. here are a few pics nonetheless. you will notice that DOMO has these interesting patches and lines on her to seal where the panels are aligned next to one another. if you look at the last update, you can see how the sheetrock panels are laid next to one another. this plaster pretty much sealed up the edges and made it nice and smooth.

while the crew worked on all this plaster shit, they dropped a lot onto the floor. so i've been spending my weekends on my hands and knees scraping them off the floor with a chisel + hammer. of course with my crazy allergies, i wear a face mask but even then it's not enough. *cough cough* if you don't know which room this is by now, you should be shot. unless of course you're a new reader.

so people.....I AM FINALLY AT THE FUNNEST STAGE OF DOMO! i've been waiting for this stage since...forever. it is of course the stage where i get to choose COLORS and decorate the inside of DOMO! yay! w00t!! ok ok, it's still a little ways from actually decorating DOMO but the ideas and thoughts have to come together NOW because it will impact which color i will use, the furniture i will need, the feeling and tone of the rooms.
so i've met with my painting guy and he told me he uses dunn edwards. so i hauled myself there one day and stood in front of their color chip display and felt like i wanted to heave. now granted, i've been looking at colors for the past year from lowes and home depot and anywhere else when i got the chance but to finally really decide? *gulp* it's harder than i thought. and colors can be so tricky! and let's not forget the literally....hundreds (if not over a thousand) of colors and each shade being different from the next.

the hardest part of course is thinking what color you would love to see in your room and then seeing how different it actually looks on the wall.
seeing that that was the best way to decide on paint colors, i went with colors i thought would be great in that particular room based on lighting, mood, use etc and bought little quarts to test out on the walls. let's say...i have to this day bought 10 quarts and i am still unsure of what to do in 4 of the rooms (office, bedroom and 2 baths).

i feel like goldilocks but instead of porridge, i'm dealing with paint. too dark. too light. too purple. too blue. too gray. too warm. too cold. too intense. too blah. but for the most part i seriously have an idea of what colors to use in each room but just haven't found the right shade. and that is the part that is driving me batty!

in these two photos, you're getting a look at some of the color palettes i'm veering towards. there may be a couple more color schemes i'm looking into but haven't picked up the chips yet.
i pretty much have the color down for the 1st level - which consists of the family/living room and the kitchen. it will most likely be this one called citrus spice - a yellow green that is reminiscent of yuzu and lime combined. i'm going for a very modern and bright color that will create a very cheerful but refreshing aura. now i'm no interior designer and may not have the pedigree to be on top design but the vision of how it will look is completely mapped out in my head already. and this citrus spice is gonna do it for me.

i know it's a bit shocking at first but you have to see it in natural lighting and with dark chocolate colored/stained furniture and a cool tone flooring. i think it's gonna rock but you may hate it. and i don't really care right? right. i will probably go with white kitchen cabinets to offset this. my initial red cabinets may not go as planned (not because of this wall color but change in overall decision). we. shall. see.

this one is pearly star, which will most likely be painted in the stairwell / staircase area. it's a neutral color with grayish undertones and a silvery finish. since our staircase will not have too much lighting and very high ceilings, i want to keep this area on the brighter side so that artwork will show up well here on the walls and people won't be lost in the twilight zone when going up and down the staircase. :p i'll take a pic and post it in the next entry for you to see.

we are NOT going with this color but this was one of those colors that truly looked darker on the chip and i thought it would look great in our office...to only end up with a freakin mango pudding on our walls!! it's called orange delight really but i can't think of anything else aside from mango pudding at dim sum when i see this. add some evaporated milk please!
the office is becoming a very hard place to decide on because of the lighting in there as the room faces south and sunlight is abundant for most of the afternoon (from 12pm thru 3pm). mainly because the purpose of the room is to be on the computer a lot of the time, i want it to be energizing but not too exciting that it's gonna cause anxiety. i want it soothing but also sophisticated. so so so hard to decide on. i've seriously put up about 5-6 colors on the walls already and i think i will probably decide on a nice grass green or something. just gotta find the.perfect.shade.of.green. of course if the office is green and i have a green view outside to the plants...will it be too jungley?!?

here's another failed office color. it's called bumblebee and it ended up being too bright and crazy for the office feel. it came out to be a beautiful and i mean beautiful rich curry color (which i love) but it just wasn't working for that room and so i had to nix this one too.
i'll post another entry soon with more actual paint on the wall colors to show you and more paint choices. don't worry, not all of them are this shocking. most of them are quite subdued but at least i got these colors out of my system and know how to proceed.
stay tuned for more project DOMO entries soon!
